New Hampshire could’ve made a grave error recently, coming within a few votes of putting abortion policies more extreme than that of most of Europe into effect. Constitutional Amendment CACR 23’s ambiguous language could have made New Hampshire one of only eight places in America that allow virtually unlimited abortions – a threat to the future families of people like Students for Life Action student Ruby Furbish
Earlier this year, she had the pleasure of speaking before the New Hampshire Senate Judiciary Committee as both a state resident, and on behalf of Students for Life Action and our 501c3 sister organization, Students for Life of America, in opposition to the casual violence and lasting harms of abortion.
Powerfully, Ruby spoke to her background as a pre-nursing student at Gordon College in neighboring Massachusetts and how she entered medicine to save lives and help humanity, not end lives for profit.
She also spoke to how this generation of mothers along with the next generation of women deserve more than just the violence of abortion with all of its despair and mental health issues that follow it or the fear of motherhood preached by too many elected officials. In fact, 68 percent of New Hampshire residents say they want some kind of limit on abortion, a fact ignored by the lobby asking for more death by abortion.
New Hampshire may have the motto of “Live Free or Die,” but freedom at any level cannot mean the right to infringe upon another human being’s right to life.
The truth is almost 70 percent of abortions are coerced, unwanted or inconsistent with a mothers values, according to a study from the Charlotte Lozier Institute. That same study found 60 percent of women “would have preferred to give birth” if there was more emotional and financial support.
The Youth Vote is uncomfortable with all the abortion pushed by those who profit from it. This past January, Students for Life of America (SFLA) and the Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement (IPA) released its annual survey data of youth voters, examining the political and policy views on the life issue held by this demographic which is now reportedly more than one-third of the electorate and headed toward majority status.
The data found less than one in 10 supported the radical abortion agenda of the national Democratic Party of abortion through all nine months, for any reason at all, paid for by taxpayers, and without consideration of people’ conscience rights – people like me,
The poll also found:
- 55 percent said abortion ranked among their top 3 issues
- 4 in 10 (40 percent) wanted to support political candidates who support abortion limits
- More than 6 in 10 want a limit on abortion, and 37 percent supported protections at a confirmed heartbeat or before then
- 31 percent said they would be willing to accept limits on abortion if more services and help were available.
- More than 9 in 10 supported offering care to an infant who survives a botched abortion — 72 percent supported emergency measures including calling 911 with 19 percent desiring care, not including 911.
- Most tellingly of all: only 9 percent picked “nothing should be done since the mother was trying to have an abortion done”
In addition to CACR 23, the abortion lobby had a second bite at the bad apple with another constitutional amendment, CACR 24, which also would have enshrined into law abortion access at stages where the babies can live outside the womb. Thankfully, the state Senate voted that amendment down, too.
Beyond defeating those two amendments, more needs to be done in New Hampshire to defend preborn children and mothers. In other states, such as Florida and Wyoming, this has been accomplished through the passage of restrictions of the sale and distribution of deadly chemical abortions pills and heartbeat protection laws, just to name a few.
With the 2024 election on the horizon and New Hampshire’s role as a critical swing state, any further advocacy or support for abortion will prove costly. Several Republicans have already been called out by Students for Life Action for their votes in favor of expanded abortion access, and the group will continue to educate voters regarding where their legislators stand.
Hopefully, the elected leaders in New Hampshire can show courage on behalf of the most vulnerable in our society, by defending life from conception to natural death without apology – living up to the motto our state carries with pride: “Live Free or Die.”
