Gov. Chris Sununu is one of former President Donald Trump’s most outspoken opponents, so it was no surprise Trump threw an elbow at the Granite State governor during his stop at Windham High School Tuesday.
Trump got his first opportunity to take a swing at Sununu early in his speech during his pitch for improved veterans services. When Trump noted New Hampshire is the only state in the nation without a full-service VA hospital, a woman in the audience shouted, “Because of our corrupt governor.”
Trump was delighted. “I was waiting for that, thank you,” he said before asking the woman to stand up.
“Selfish selfish,” Trump said of Sununu. “Well, he ran for president, and he got two points. He ran without running; he didn’t want to announce. It’s a shame.
“We could win this state so easily if we had help from the governor, but we never got help from the governor,” Trump added. “We helped him, but he never helped us.”
Sununu has made no secret of his opposition to Trump being the nominee or his willingness to endorse and promote one of the other candidates in the First in the Nation primary.
“Ever seen a soap opera?” Sununu told ABC News last month. “They get kind of boring. The only thing worse is the rerun of a soap opera. And that’s what [Trump] is bringing. A lot of drama to the table.”
And Sununu recently left CNN’s Poppy Harlow stunned when he predicted that neither Trump nor President Joe Biden would be on the general election ballot in November 2024.
Then there was the time in April of 2022 when Sununu called Trump “f*cking crazy” at the annual Gridiron Dinner in Washington, D.C.
Trump returned the favor on Tuesday, calling Sununu’s flirtation with a White House run a flop.
“He took a big beating, knocking the hell out of everybody,” Trump said. “He took a big beating, and then he gets the first poll, and he sees that, in his own state, he was in like seventh place.”
Later in the speech, Trump circled back for another shot.
“You know, you do need some personality if you’re gonna be a politician, just a little. Some of them don’t have too much, like your governor,” Trump said.
Ironically, the New Hampshire Democratic Party spent four years and hundreds of thousands of dollars on an ad campaign attempting to label Sununu a “Trump guy through and through.”
Sununu is scheduled to appear with former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, another Trump critic, at a town hall in Salem Wednesday night.
Sununu’s team did not respond to a request for comment.
