Violent, fiery riots may be raising questions about Democrats’ opposition to increased immigration enforcement, but at least one New Hampshire Democrat isn’t backing down on her support for illegal aliens in the U.S.
On Monday, U.S. Rep. Maggie Goodlander (D-N.H.) called President Donald Trump’s decision to send National Guard troops to Los Angeles in response to the riots “a deeply concerning escalation.”
Meanwhile, her official congressional website has a message for illegal immigrants: I’m here to help.
“Listed below is important information about your rights during interactions with ICE officers. Stay informed so you can assert your rights confidently, no matter the situation,” reads the Goodlander page, headlined “Know Your Rights.”
Among the helpful tips from Goodlander to illegal aliens: “ICE does not have the right to enter your home without a valid warrant signed by a judge.” And because ICE agents apparently aren’t necessarily trustworthy enough to speak with face-to-face, Goodlander adds, “You can ask them to slip the warrant under the door.”
Goodlander also reminds illegal immigrants, “You are not obligated to provide personal information like your immigration status, place of birth, or criminal history if asked.”
“If our office can assist you in any way, please be in touch by completing this form or calling 603-226-1002,” Goodlander adds.
A review of the other three New Hampshire federal officials’ websites did not turn up similar pages. (Perhaps not surprisingly, Shaheen — who signed a state law allowing abortion without any restrictions up to the day of birth — has a “Know Your Rights Abortion Guide” on her Senate webpage.
The first-term Democrat has been clear that she is no supporter of Trump’s increased immigration enforcement. Before taking office, she was asked on WMUR if she would support a mass deportation effort targeting illegal immigrants who had committed additional crimes.
Goodlander refused to answer the question.
She also declined to respond to NHJournal’s requests for comment about her webpage offering tips to illegal aliens.
The National Republican Congressional Committee, on the other hand, was more than happy to respond.
“Out of touch Democrat Maggie Goodlander blatantly putting lawlessness and illegal immigrants ahead of law-abiding citizens is appalling, but sadly, unsurprising,” said NRCC spokeswoman Maureen O’Toole. “Goodlander has voted to leave our borders wide open, allow illegal immigrants to decide our elections, and even force Granite Staters to foot the bill for illegal immigrants’ health care.”
Simply talking about the L.A. riots and Trump’s response makes Goodlander an exception in the New Hampshire federal delegation. None of the other three have made a public statement, and they would not respond to questions from NHJournal.
Meanwhile, Democrats across the country, including next door in Massachusetts, have been more than willing to speak out against Trump’s crackdown on the rioters, or to join in the condemnation of his policy of deporting illegal immigrants,
“Trump isn’t trying to quell a crisis in California. He’s trying to incite one,” said U.S. Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.)
“To our neighbors in L.A.: be peaceful, be calm,” she added. “And Donald, this isn’t reality TV. You are endangering Americans.”
Goodlander’s one announced opponent in the 2026 race, Lily Tang Williams, offered a very different view.
“I condemn (the) L.A. riots. This is the consequence of Democrats’ open border policies under Biden that Rep. Goodlander supports,” she posted.
“We must stop funding sanctuary cities and deport illegal criminals. Any politician who encourages violence against law enforcement officers must be held accountable!”
