Housing is the number one issue facing New Hampshire. Candidates on both sides of the political aisle hear it every day from voters. Your family talks about it at the dinner table. Rents are too high, interest rates are too high, and the cost of homes is simply out of control.
There is one group on the knife point of this issue: The New Hampshire Home Builders Association. The New Hampshire Home Builders Association is a hard working trade association with 520 members representing the 27,000 hard working men and women whose careers are directly tied to the residential building industry. We, home builders, contribute $5.4 billion dollars to New Hampshire’s economy.
We have strong opinions on housing. We are proposing strong solutions. We need a legislative team to help conquer this statewide challenge. This challenge warrants telling the New Hampshire voters whom we feel they could trust to fix this problem of both attainability and affordability.
These reasons are why we, the NHHBA, have issued endorsements in the 2024 election cycle. We will stand with those elected leaders who stood shoulder to shoulder with the NH Home Builders.
Over the last two years we fought to keep funds available for weatherization projects so our low income neighbors could stay in their homes longer and save on heating costs. We pushed back, fought and won against federal efforts to add $76 million dollars of consumer debt onto the backs of Granite Staters, commonly referred to as the ‘Green Energy Tax’. We will be advocating for the right of home owners to add an auxiliary dwelling unit (ADU) or if you are old like me, commonly known as an “in-law apartment”. That extra income can provide housing that is affordable and at the same time, help you afford to stay in your home. Everyone wins.
The NHHBA hosted presidential, gubernatorial, and congressional candidates right here in our offices. The candidates listened to the concerns of home builders and we, in turn, listened to their ideas for addressing the housing crisis. However, it was especially disappointing that Joyce Craig never even bothered to acknowledge our invitation to meet during the primary. Kelly Ayotte responded within the same hour and came to the meeting fully prepared to engage in active discussions on how to fix our housing crisis.
The NH Home Builders Association is a non-partisan 501 (c ) (6) organization. We endorse leaders from both political parties. While we don’t always agree on all the issues, we believe various points of view bring together the best solutions. If you are willing to engage in constructive solutions to help provide attainable workforce housing, then we will sit at the table and exchange ideas.
