Backlash erupted Wednesday when news emerged that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which has flooded New Hampshire airwaves with negative ads targeting Senator Kelly Ayotte, named Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev a “recent victim of gun violence.”

Yesterday the group held a rally in Concord, during which a list naming gun violence victims was read, Tsarneav’s included.

He was killed in a shootout with police in the days following the tragic Marathon bombings.

The Union Leader first noted Tsarneav’s mention in its report covering the protest, during which a confrontation between Bloomberg’s group and gun-rights supporters resulted in multiple arrests.

News of his “memorialization” rapidly, with organizations and onlookers nationwide calling on the Bloomberg group to renounce their dubbing a terrorist a victim.

“Tamerlan Tsarnaev was a murderous terrorist and a cold-blooded killer. It is outrageous that Mayor Bloomberg’s gun control group is so radical and out of touch with New Hampshire values that it believes this monster should be labeled as some kind of victim,” stated NH GOP chair Jennifer Horn in a press release. “President Obama and New Hampshire Democrats have joined forces with Mayor Bloomberg’s out-of-state group and openly participates in its vicious smear campaign against law abiding, Granite State gun owners. They need to immediately denounce these comments, end their relationship with this extremist group and make it clear that its radical views are not welcome in New Hampshire.”

The hours that followed have seen Mayors Against Illegal Guns formally apologize, claiming that the list read at the rally was obtained from Slate.com, per the Union Leader’s report of the renouncement.

Spokesman Alex Katz stated that Tsarnaev “was absolutely not a victim, his name should have been deleted before the list was provided to a family member for reading and his name should never have been read. It was a mistake, it should not have happened and we sincerely apologize.”

Despite the thousands of dollars the anti-gun group has put into its ad campaign against Ayotte, Dover Mayor Dean Threfethen remains the only New Hampshire member of the group.

A new study from the Congressional Budget Office challenges claims by some that the Senate ‘Gang of Eight’ immigration reform proposal would expand government spending, instead making the case for it being a deficit reducer.

According to the nonpartisan study, released yesterday, the proposal’s becoming law would reduce the deficit by about $197 billion over the next decade and $700 billion from 2024-2033.

Those numbers are juxtaposed against an estimated $258 billion increase in benefit costs, however the report emphasizes that only $25.8 billion of that is drawn from the bill’s legalization provisions.

The CBO report also predicts a boost to GDP as a result of the legislation, with a 3.3 percent increase by 2023 and a 5.4 percent increase by 2033.

The report goes on to estimate that 8 million immigrants would eventually be legalized as a result of the bill and projects an overall 10.4 million population increase.

New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte, whose decision to back the Gang of Eight proposal has been met with both praise and scorn, took to Twitter to hail the CBO’s report as proof that plan is “pro-growth.”

CBO affirms #immigration bill is pro-growth & will significantly reduce federal deficit by ~$197B over first 10 years, ~$700b btw 2024-2033

— Kelly Ayotte (@KellyAyotte) June 18, 2013

Americans for Tax Reform head Grover Norquist, another backer who’s taken some heat, issued a statement calling it “more evidence that immigration is key to economic growth.”

“And because CBO employed the type of dynamic analysis conservatives have long clamored for, we have a full accounting of both the costs and benefits of reform. I urge Congress to fix our broken immigration system for the sake of the American economy,” Norquist continued.

Meanwhile former NHGOP Chairman, Americans By Choice co-founder, and NH Journal contributor Fergus Cullen penned an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal arguing in favor of reforms to immigration and guest worker programs in the context of the success with which foreign athletes are able to play for American sports teams.

Fellow immigration reform advocate, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, tweeted Cullen’s piece.

Immigration Reform, like a much needed overhaul of Social Security and the Medicare System, has been the epitome of kick the can down the road for the next generation for over 20 years. The present bill brought forward by the Gang of 8 has one very serious flaw. Our borders must be secure prior to granting a path to citizenship to anyone. Until the borders are secure, we invite millions more into our country illegally to take advantage of the poor solution to this very complicated problem.

Recently, a number of past State Republican Chairman signed on to an Op-ed urging the Republican Party both at the State and National level to buy into the latest Immigration Reform Bill. They stated that Romney received a very small percentage of the vote from people of color. I regret to inform them that this bill, if the Republicans agree to it, is not going to change that number much at all and we will add approximately 3 to 6 trillion dollars to the deficit.

The Republicans have not in my memory ever received any national support from any of the Unions or most special interests. The Democrats promise everything to everyone with no regard of the potential cost to keep the special interests support. The recent election has shown facts other than a low number of people of color voting for Romney. It showed the special interests turned out in record numbers while millions of Republicans chose not to vote. It only makes sense that the generational welfare recipient, when given a choice between a man who will find him/her a job or the man promising to keep the gravy train coming for the next generation, will vote for the man keeping the gravy train rolling. Signing on to a flawed bill will have very little positive effect at the ballot box for Republicans.

However, securing our borders, then discussing this latest reform bill makes all the sense in the world. The Republicans need to engage in discussions with Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona and Governor Rick Perry from Texas and find the necessary steps needed to secure the borders. They live it every day. They would be outstanding resources. Also let us not forget when Arizona passed a tough immigration law and started doing the federal government’s job by detaining and attempting to stop the flow of illegal aliens, the Obama Administration took the State to court to stop this effort.

I believe that doing the right thing and not the politically correct thing will once and for all address this important issue. We cannot trust this corrupt administration to do the right thing with the borders after this bill is passed. This present administration has taken distortion of the truth to a level I thought could never happen in this nation. It is important to note that the union that represents the employees responsible for protecting the borders is also against this bill. We need to slow down and proceed with caution and fix immigration the right way, not the fast and easy way with untold hardship on the future generations of this nation.

Jim Adams is Chairman of Granite State Taxpayers

Yet in a recent interview with Time, Schumer minced no words when it came to his thoughts on Bloomberg’s tactics, saying that the billionaire’s ads were ineffective.

“I am trying to persuade–in whatever way I’m allowed to–the gun groups to put out different ads. Frankly, I don’t think Bloomberg’s ads are effective,” he stated. “The mayor of New York City putting ads against people in red states is not going to be effective.”

Schumer went on to mention that one senator targeted in the ad campaign stated constituents “shrugged off the spot because an accent revealed the speaker to be an actor.”

Among those targeted in the ads is New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte, with Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns group pumping hundreds of thousands into TV ads claiming she opposes background checks due to her vote against the Manchin-Toomey gun proposal.

But as New Hampshire Journal’s Shawn Millerick has noted, the ads have been repeatedly exposed as shirking Ayotte’s overall record on background checks.

George Lambert, a Litchfield state Rep. who tailors himself a “socially liberal and fiscally conservative Republican,” has confirmed that he is seriously considering mounting a campaign for New Hampshire’s highest office in 2014.

“There is an ongoing message that we need accountability and transparency,” he stated in an interview with The Nashua Telegraph. “If we can bring that, we would have a state that changed its culture in the way new leadership changed New York City from a very rough town into a fairly safe place to live.”

Lambert joins Bedford state Senator Andy Sanborn, Executive Councilor Chris Sununu, Salem state Senator Chuck Morse, and 2012 candidate Kevin Smith on the list of Republicans weighing a bid against Governor Maggie Hassan.

Smith’s 2012 effort was backed by Lambert, who noted that he would “happily support” him should he indeed decide to run again. That decision has been given a timetable for sometime this summer.

In a statement, NH GOP head Jennifer Horn welcomed all Republicans interested in challenging Hassan.

“We welcome all candidates to the race and look forward to a productive primary that will produce a fiscally responsible Republican nominee who will defeat Governor Hassan,” she stated, per the Telegraph’s report.

New Hampshire Democratic Party communications director Harrell Kirstein, on the other hand, was less flattering, saying that “Lambert would fit better in a circus tent than in New Hampshire’s corner office.”

In what has been a highly-anticipated decision, New Hampshire junior Senator Kelly Ayotte announced her support for immigration reform legislation backed by the bipartisan ‘Gang of Eight’ including Republicans Marco Rubio, John McCain, and Jeff Flake and Democrats Chuck Schumer and Dick Durbin.

Ayotte first announced her support for the legislation in an appearance on CBS’s ‘Face the Nation’ on Sunday:

She subsequently tweeted out an op-ed detailing her support for the bill, writing, “After careful review of this bill, and after meeting with Granite Staters, I will support it and plan to vote for amendments offered to strengthen it.”

Ayotte went on to stress the need to “separate those seeking economic opportunity from those seeking to harm us (who must be deported)” and pledged to support measures to further strengthen border security. In addition to her support for the bill’s focus on border security, Ayotte detailed other positives of the legislation:

“Also, under this bill all employers would be required to use an employment verification system – known as “E-Verify” – to check that job applicants are lawful for employment. To put teeth into the law, employers would face fines and possible criminal penalties for violations of E-Verify requirements.

“Additionally, the legislation cracks down on those who abuse our visa system. Right now, 40 percent of illegal immigrants originally came legally but overstayed their visas. This bill creates an exit system feature that would enable the Department of Homeland Security to more vigorously track, pursue and remove those who overstay their visas.

“The legislation also includes strict requirements for those illegal immigrants who are already here. Before any of these 11 million could earn a green card, they would go to the back of the line, not receive means-tested federal benefits and Obamacare subsidies, and they would be required to pay fines, pay taxes, and pass background checks, learn English, and secure a job. The minimum most immigrants would have to wait to earn a green card would be ten years – and 13 years for naturalization. And this timeline is dependent on first meeting border security and employment enforcement measures.

“In addition to fixing our illegal immigration problem, the bill also takes steps to modernize our legal immigration system. To help ensure our hospitality and agricultural sectors are able to fill jobs that Americans won’t perform, the bill creates a new guest worker visa program. And the legislation addresses concerns that I’ve heard frequently from New Hampshire’s business community, especially the high-tech industry: the outdated cap on visas for highly-skilled workers is holding back our economy.

“After companies make every effort to recruit Americans to perform particular jobs and can’t find any – especially those with expertise in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) – they are forced to look elsewhere. This legislation addresses that shortfall by raising the cap on H-1B visas. And to train the American innovators of tomorrow, it creates new STEM education programs – from K-12 to higher education – financed through a $1,000 fee for those applying for H-1B visas.”

Ayotte’s support will likely be viewed as a major victory for the bill’s proponents, and further establishes the Granite State Senator as willing to take bold positions and be unafraid of facing critics.

Thank you, Kelly Ayotte, for standing up for your beliefs. The recent attacks on Senator Ayotte are a prime example as to how far Obama, Shot Gun Joe Biden, Big Gulp, Trans Fat Bloomberg and the rest of the liberal truth distortion machine will go to attempt to ruin the career of one of the brightest persons of integrity and honor this state has ever had as an elected official.

We must all remember that Shot Gun Joe and Obama kept calling for a gun control vote. They concocted a half-baked rehash of Senator Feinstein’s attack on the Second Amendment and they were going to harass and lie about those that voted against their bad bill.

Fortunately for New Hampshire, Senator Ayotte stood by her convictions that we already have plenty of safeguards in place. They simply need to be utilized. We do not need more draconian measures. She wrote an excellent Op Ed that appeared in the Union Leader and other leading papers in the state explaining her logic very well.

It is important to note that out-of-state interests are out to get Senator Ayotte. I believe they doth protest too much. They are scared to death of a person like Senator Ayotte. She is very dangerous to Liberal Social Agenda. She has integrity and is not a rubber stamp like the other New Hampshire Senator. She believes in small government, low taxes and taking care of those in need with a helping hand up, not a generational hand out. And most of all, as a former Attorney General, she believes in the Constitution. Those qualities horrify the liberal hate mongers who lied about what really happened on the Gun Control vote.

Remember Bloomberg tells the people in New York City what they can eat and how large their portions can be. Little wonder he has spent $700,000 to make Senator Ayotte look bad by lying about her to promote his Mayors against Guns agenda.

Senator Ayotte believes in tweaking the present laws relative to gun purchases and keeping guns out of the hands of felons and the mentally ill. Thank you, Senator Ayotte, for doing the right thing, not the politically correct thing. Mayor Bloomberg should have used his $700,000 to help the cause of battered and abused women or taking on the ACLU to make it easier for authorities to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. Instead, he chose to attack their greatest fear: an honest, smart woman not afraid to stand up for what she believes – a person brave enough to stare at the man accused of murdering a Manchester police officer and telling him she was asking for the death penalty for the horrible crime he had committed.

New Hampshire is indeed fortunate to have such an outstanding Senator. Don’t listen to the lies and the liberal hate machine. Those accusations are unfounded and without honor.

Dear Politicians,

Why can’t we buy natural gas in most of our State?

85% of Carroll County residents use oil or propane to heat their homes. 10% rely on wood. 4% rely on electricity and less than 1% of rely on natural gas.

The average home heating bill is $3000 per year. That figure jumps to $10000 on average per year for business.

Carroll County spends nearly $175 million each year for oil and propane. That figure does not include transportation fuel or electricity.

At current natural gas prices, homeowners could save an average of $150 per month or $1800 per year. Businesses could see their spending go from $6 million per month to $4million per month.

Over 50% of US Homes use natural gas as a heating source. Carroll County is less than 1%. New Hampshire, in total, is only 18%.

New Hampshire ranks # 46 in the United States relative to the use of natural gas.

So why are Carroll County, and our State, left out in the cold?

Lack of vision is a terrible tax.

In the 1968-69 timeframe, the government decided to do away with the draft and create an all-volunteer armed service. This idea of a completely volunteer armed service was met with a little skepticism at the beginning, but it eventually evolved into the outstanding force we have today.

After working out the wrinkles in Panama and Granada, the first real test of this force was Desert Storm. That action was the baptism under fire of this all-volunteer force and they far exceeded all expectations. After September 11, 2001, everything changed for our men and women in uniform. For the first time in our recent history, and not since World War II, America was involved in a two-front war with troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Granted, this action was in no way to be compared to World War II. In Iraq and Afghanistan, the total number of troops numbered less than 500,000.

These brave men and women, some of whom have had 2, 3 or even 4 tours of duty, in conjunction with the new role the National Guard and Reserves have been asked to take on, augmenting the regular Army, Navy, Marine, and Air Force in combat zones. Some of these Guard and Reserve units have also been called up 2, 3 and even 4 times to serve in the hostile dangerous war zones. The strain on the servicemen and women as well as their families has been enormous.

This nation owes a great deal of thanks to this stalwart 1% that keep us free and are willing to give up all of their tomorrows so that we can enjoy today. I am glad to report that these brave warriors have been given the utmost support. They are greeted by many outstanding groups of folks, locally the Pease Greeters and many groups similar to it around the country and are given high praise and are appreciated far better than those who served during the time when the draft was ended.

But even those still hurting from the awful reception they received returning from Vietnam were very pleased and indeed thankful for the recent Welcome Home event in April for the Vietnam Veterans at the National Guard Facility in Concord, New Hampshire.

This brave 1% is to be thanked and remembered every day for what they do for this nation – support and appreciation for our troops and their families. They are willing to give all, and we all need to do whatever we can to help those who give so much, any time anywhere.

As a nation, we are very fortunate that we have such brave men and women willing to step up and defend our freedom. We are fortunate indeed. A grateful Nation can never forget such fine men and women.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz is still in year one of his first-term in office, but that isn’t stopping buzz surrounding a potential White House bid in 2016, and his most recent speaking invitation will likely only stoke the speculation.

Cornerstone Action has invited Cruz to speak at its annual dinner, likely to be held in late October.

Though not confirmed as the speaker, the senator’s scheduler told Ashley Pratte, Cornerstone’s executive director, that he was “very interested.” A final answer should be made public within the next couple of weeks.

Should Cruz make a foray into the Granite State, he would join the ranks of Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and Kentucky Senator Rand Paul as potential 2016 contenders who’ve paid a visit in 2013. Jindal, who also chairs the Republican Governor’s Association, headlined a recent fundraiser for the state Senate Republicans while Paul keynoted the NH GOP’s first-ever Liberty Dinner earlier this month.
